Cairns Fudge Cricket Club - Indoor Team 2007Indoor

In late August the curtain fell on the most successful and dramatic season of CFCC’s history. The dust had only just settled from the drama of ‘The Fudge Cup’ - the Club’s blue ribbon event - when discussions started to gather pace on how to keep the teams momentum (and peak physical condition) going throughout the winter months. The CFCC Winter Academy was born. The destination was set for New South Wales, Australia - but due to a severe lack of facilities at the proposed location and living that could only have been described as squalid - Oxford was preferred and an 11 week residency began at Kidlington & Gosford Sports Centre on Thursday evenings.

An incredible number of players made up the winter roster - a grand total of 11 ‘Fabulous Bakin’ Boys’ sponsored shirts were donned in total, and seven indoor cricket fixtures hastily arranged against local Oxfordian sides. The first practice session was on February 1st, and three weeks later our debut indoor match was upon us.

Indoor Cricket Rules

- Six players per side, Twelve six ball overs, max 3 per bowler.

- One run for hitting a side or rear wall with two runs scored for an actual run where the batsman cross. 4 runs for hitting the end wall and 6 runs for hitting the end wall without the ball bouncing. Ways of getting out are the same with the added peril of being given out having launched the ball at the ceiling.

1st Match vs Oxford United Hospitals – 22nd Feb

OUH elected to bat, and set 83. CFCC managed 60-1

Key moments:
The Fudge’s debut match started in comical fashion. 4 run outs (miraculous work by Small on all 4 occasions!!!!!) in first 2 overs left OUH reeling at 9-4. Their tail enders dug in, and The Fudge lost total grip on the dominant start. Tentative batting ensured our downfall.

LOST Fudgetastic? No! 5/10

Runs: Milne 25no, Jeffery 20, Small 8no
Wickets: Small 4 (run outs!!), Kemp 1, Milne 1

2nd Match vs Holton CC – 25th Feb

CFCC put Holton in to Bat. Holton set 120-5. CFCC managed 85

Key moments:
Holton made what seemed to be a reachable total with some tentative which left the door a-jar for The Fudge. Some tight bowling by Dane, and epic fielding by debutant Johnny and Wakeo. A confident start by Dane (caught by Alan Banyard akin to a Fraggle flying from it’s rock – landing on his cock) and Small wasn’t enough. Andrew’s attempted salvage was futile.

LOST
Fudgetastic? No! 4/10

Runs: Jensen 18, Small 12, Milne 42
Wickets: Small 2 (run outs), Jensen 2, Milne 1

3rd Match vs Oxford United Hospitals – 8th Mar

CFCC elected to bat first and made 123-5. OUH 85

Key moments:
In the 2nd match of our three match series against OUH we were keen to level the score. After winning a crucial toss, Dave and Jambo gave us a great start – which Andrew and Raggy built upon steadily. Jambo (now Rambo), came back in and let loose – resulting in comfortable our best innings. Kristian & Mark opened our defence with devastating accuracy.

Result – WIN
Fudgetastic? Yes! 8/10

Runs: James 42no, Jeffery 22, Ragg 20
Wickets: Jensen 2, Milne 2, Kemp 2

4th Match vs Charlton on Otmoor – 22nd Mar

CFCC chose to bat and made 120-5. Charlton managed 81 all
out

Key moments:
From the off it was clear Charlton were good. Tight bowling reduced Fudge to 18-4. But then in walks Dr. Mark. With surgical precision he and Andrew began dissecting the opposition, with deft cuts and a few hacks they produced an unheard of indoor century partnership. Charlton, a little over confident from the off, dribbled to 81 thanks to Dane and Andrew.

WIN Fudgetastic? Yes! 9/10

Runs: Milne 62no, Kemp 37, Jensen 0
Wickets: Jensen 2, Milne 3, Jeffery 1

5th Match vs Holton – 25th Mar

CFCC put in to bat, set 112-5. Holton made 111-5

Key moments:
This match was big. Revenge was sought. After a poor start after Andrew was smartly stumped by J. Rae, and expected headless chicken running from CJ, Fudge posted arespectable score thanks to a late surge of runs from Smally and Mark. Some super tight bowling from Kristian and Johnny enabled a grandstand finish. With 5 needed off the last bowl for victory, there were comical scenes as Fudge crowded the back wall. A tip and run almost secured the victory for Holton – but a direct hit run-out saved the Fudge from a series defeat.

WIN WIN WIN WIN FUDGETASTIC? Erm Yeah… 10/10

Runs: Small 37no, Medwin 14, Kemp 27no
Wickets: Small 2 (run outs), Jensen 1, Milne 1

6th Match vs Oxford United Hospitals – 29th Mar

CFCC chose to bat first and made 133, OUH skittled out for 95

Key moments: Another Key match. 1 Victory a piece in the Mini- Super-Series. A bit of a case of ‘We Came, We Saw, We Conquered’ as this match boasted Cairns Fudge’s highest ever indoor total. Everyone chipped in, Including Fudge’s ex-captain (who had earned a recall). Daf took all six wickets and goes down in cricket history as the greatest over ever. Shut your face Malinga.

WIN Fudgetastic? Yes! 8/10

Runs: Milne 37no, Ragg 19, James 20, Howells 10
Wickets: James 2, Milne 2, Small 1

7th Match vs Charlton on Otmoor – 7th Mar

Charlton elected to bat, made 99-4. CFCC 100-5 OFF 10 overs

Key moments:
The season finale started as a tense affair, Dane finished an excellent winter season with a solid performance – and CJ stole his wickets in this match with some questionable bowling. Some excellent work in the field and a comfortable batting chase made to look easy by Dave Jeffery (who had began to stretch his little legs). Smally batted his way to a credible 20no and the match was never in doubt.

WIN. 5 WINS IN-A-ROW IN FACT. Fudgetastic? Yes! 8/10

Runs: Jeffery 39no, James 18, Small 20no
Wickets: James 2, Jeffery 1, Clark 1
