Why 'Cairns
Fudge'?

The
beginning...
On the 18th of July 2004, we received a call from the Holton Captain.
He informed us that Sunningwell CC (the opposition for the game the
following day) had pulled out and that the game was off.
It was suggested to the Holton Captain that
we could get a side together to provide opposition for Holton instead.
The Captain agreed with this and began letting the Holton players
know that they would now be facing an Andrew Small Invitational XI.
For the rest of day and much of the evening, Andy set about calling
numerous Hockey contacts (and any of our friends who could feasibly
run and/or catch a cricket ball) to see if they fancied a game of
Cricket the next day. Eventually after a lot of badgering from Smally,
about 7 people agreed to play and a team was born.
Origin of 'Cairns Fudge'...
We now needed a name
for our team. Lots of ideas were bounced about the living room for
an hour or so but they were all pretty bad. A flash of inspiration
came from Sky Sports News. Chris Cairns, the all action New Zealand
all rounder had retired from Test Cricket.
Chris Cairns was always a favourite
player of the boys at 24 Percy St. When free from injury, his big
hitting, fast bowling and athletic fielding entertained crowds across
the vast cricketing globe. Coupled with his David Hasslehoff like
good looks, Chris Cairns will always be remembered as a true icon
of the modern game and one of the best players New Zealand Cricket
has ever produced. What better tribute to the great man than to name
a Cricket team after his new business venture, Cairns Fudge Ltd.

On the back of this game, it was decided that for the 2005 season, we would
try and establish Cairns Fudge as a proper Cricket side.

The Future...
The success of Cairns Fudge
was never going to be based on the performances of seasoned village
cricketers as we hardly have any available to us. The commitment and
enthusiasm of those who are relatively new to playing the game of Cricket
has carried us through and long may that continue...
